The Russian artist Michael Steinberg was born in Kishinev (Russia) in 1933'. He started painting in the latter part of the 1950s in the city of Llov. Steinberg's  style of modern art  is unique, without any training in art school or academy he paved his way independently, developing his talents as he went along undeterred by official art critics when they threw his paintings out of galleries and exhibitions.

There is a serious thought on his drawings; the style seems a combination of natural expressionism, which is quite unique, and of a non-commercial Russian folklore. Steinberg  portrays landscapes by using a personal and fashionable modern style and also portraits. He draws from memory the people of his childhood town Lvov. Most of Steiberg's  works have been done in Israel (although a lot of his early work is owned by Russian collectors, as well as are thought to be in some of the archives of Russian Museums). The undulating hills and landscapes shown in his early paintings are a natural trait to Steinberg. The element of ethnic folklore radiates a natural charm, slightly naive, maybe to this sort of modern  art, but then it is really not naive at all...

In 1974 Steinberg left Russia - with only 12 of his paintings - and came to Israel. Here he started a new phase in his life and in his work, since when many of his more recent paintings have been acquired by collectors from all over the world as artists of modern art

Since his move to Israel Steinberg painted a lot of his pictures from his memory of the Russian past, but now started incorporating Jerusalem, his present hometown. Jerusalem appears in his pictures time and time again, however the inhabitants do not look like modern  Israelis but rather like the gypsies of his childhood days. Steinberg seems a Dreamer a Visionary - in his comparison of the old and new world, nothing remains from the objectivity of this morning, other than a metallic blue without the introduction of any sort of contours. Michael Steinberg paints pictures of the Red and Dead Seas, and pictures from the Sinai dessert.

In Israel he is at home - he says.

In his later years in Israel Steinberg experiments with a more modern style and seems to continuously be able to discover new ways and forms of expression and modern art. His newer pictures include a lot of portraits of different images and people painted in a clearer, less colorful, but more detailed way - he even experiments by integrating objects from certain scenes, thereby creating collages.

Throughout the years Steinberg has done many exhibitions, mostly in Europe (Prague, Munich , Jerusalem )  and has a strong following from specific collectors, who always return to his modern art.

Steinberg  lived in Jerusalem and most of his work is archived and stored in Israel.
